Paddy Straw (Volvariella bombycina)

Habitat: Bearded egg fungus is a tree fungus. It occurs on the trunks of dead deciduous trees, as well as on injured trees in elm, maple and beech trees.

Season: In July and December.

Edibility and Toxicity: Non-toxic. It is among the good edible mushrooms. As with many mushrooms, some people do not like this mushroom, but there are also those who love it.

Additional information: Bearded Egg Mushroom, similar to Volvopluteus gloiocephalus, which in the early stages similarly occurs in an egg sac, this fungus has a smooth, silky cap and grows in stubble fields and pastures. It is similar to the Toxic - Non-Toxic Amanita species that occur in some volva, when they are in egg form. The bearded egg fungus grows on trees, not on earthen ground like Amanitas, which is a great distinguishing feature in its identification.
