Flock Of Hummingbirds Gather In Bird Bath For A Mini Pool Party

Hummingbirds are very tiny and fragile birds that are only a few inches long. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that some hummingbird species are endangered. The females lay eggs that are smaller than the size of a jelly bean and their nests are as small as a thimble. Hummingbirds flap their wings 50-80 beats per second which is why they appear as a blur to the human eye.

Surprisingly, their wings are not the only speedy thing about these marvels of Mother Nature. Even their metabolism speed is quite high and their weight can alter instantly during the course of a day as they eat and burn up energy. This speedy metabolism is the reason why they feed 5-8 times an hour. No wonder hummingbirds spend a lot of time filling up their tiny stomachs.

These birds consume half to eight times their weight in sugar on a daily basis. A hummingbird’s heart beats more than 1200 per minute, while the human heart beats around 80 times per minute. Hence, a hummingbird’s heart beats 20 times every time a human heart beats.
