First of all, the most beautiful representatives of Polyplectron bicalcaratum (Grey Peacock Pheasants) are males! And the female birds are smaller, have darker color and less ornamented than the male. So, if in photographs or paintings you see a gorgeous bird with grayish brown feathers perfectly ornamented by green eye spots, it is for sure a male. Also, known as Burmese Peacock Pheasant, Grey Peacock Pheasant is the national bird of Myanmar.
Noteworthy, large peacock pheasant can be up to 76 cm long! As for coloration – it has finely spotted green eye-spots, an elongated bushy crest, bare pink or yellow facial skin, white throat, and grey iris, bill and legs. As mentioned above, the female bird is smaller, darker and less ornamented, and the young peacock pheasant resemble the female. The female usually lays two eggs.
